What is an Apprenticeship?
The Registered Apprenticeship program brings career-building opportunities, just like any other job! Apprenticeships are industry-sponsored, paid worker trainings that combine on-the-job learning and classroom instruction. You essentially earn-while-you learn and earn a certificate at the completion of the program.
If you are unemployed and seeking a meaningful career with high salary potential, an apprenticeship could help you achieve your goals! According to the Department of Labor, workers who complete an registered apprenticeship program earn $300,000 more over a lifetime than their peers who don’t.
How It Works
Sponsors have different approaches to completing the registered apprenticeship program(s) determined by the industry and the approved standards for a particular occupation. With some, students are able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends (about 144 hours/year of the the apprenticeship program) and go to on-the job training (OJT) during the day. The classroom hours may be in person, but many programs now have virtual options.
Apprentices have a mentor who has a lot of experience to help support the apprentice through on the job training. It is very much like a teacher helps to support classroom learning. On the job training in a registered apprenticeship program is a minimum of 2000 hours.
Apprentices are employees from day one and, as such, get paid to learn. It fosters loyalty and job retention. Most of the expenses for apprenticeship are covered by the sponsor through grants, contracts, and funding from local, state and the federal government.
Also, intermediaries like net.America provide incentive funds which can cover wrap-around services, especially for youth in registered apprenticeship programs between the ages of 16 and 21. Upon completion of the registered apprenticeship program, you will receive a nationally recognized certificate to show that you finished the program and gained mastery in the occupation. This certificate is recognized by the United States Department of Labor.
